The AA’s expenditure on 3rd party goods and services is c. £350m with the major costs incurred across IT Hardware, Software and Services and associated spend categories. As the Category Manager you will support the Procurement and IT functions in successfully delivering the following:

  • IT Strategy & Architecture - to ensure new and changed IT is built on solid foundations and to drive the appropriate exploitation of technology across the company
  • IT Operations – to deliver a great IT service to the business, and to deliver the underlying infrastructure for the AA

You will provide strategic direction and operational support to a diverse group of stakeholders and partners, ensuring business requirements are clearly understood and accounted for. You will also be responsible for the development, validation, and sustainable implementation of all relevant category strategies to deliver optimum value-for-money, quality and sustainability for the AA. These category strategies will align with the complex requirements of a diverse organization, keen to embrace and optimize modern processes and technology.

In addition, you will be responsible for the communication of sourcing plans and the alignment between Procurement and its internal clients, external suppliers and other partners. You will provide in-depth supply market knowledge, and assume ownership of the AA supply base together with associated SRM initiatives. Finally, you will fully support third party Risk Management policies and procedures, promoting control and compliance.


Financial:                      Purchasing expenditure managed & influenced up to £150m p.a    
Suppliers:                    Up to 200 key suppliers managed and/or influenced

Indirect Reports:           Up to 2

What will I be doing?

  • Provision of strategic direction, coaching and motivation to Procurement team members and internal customers, as required
  • Thorough spend analysis, a detailed understanding of the supply market and value chain
  • Developing and implementing comprehensive sub-category strategies which should ensure the most efficient use of the company’s various buying channels (strategic sourcing, e-RFPs, P-cards, e-catalogues etc)
  • Building strong relationships with the category stakeholders and ‘partner’ base as well as the Group’s Procurement organisation
  • Leading cross-functional sourcing teams and projects to achieve contracts, orders or agreements that are aligned with the sub-category strategies and deliver substantial and measurable value
  • Developing and managing relationships with key suppliers including leading significant negotiations
  • Identifying and communicating best practices and develop benchmarks that compare internal procurement performance to industry best practice
  • Owning the financial performance of the sub-categories, including agreement and verification of savings forecast, budgeting and delivery
  • You will be an Ambassador for the Procurement organisation
  • Developing, implementing and managing an SRM program appropriate to the requirements of the sub-categories.
  • Directly managing strategic and critical supplier relationships where appropriate
  • Managing/contributing to contract performance via Review meetings / analysis, as appropriate

What do I need?

Capability and Knowledge

  • Significant Category management experience encompassing strategy development and implementation
  • Cloud Consumption experience and a strong, up-to-date network
  • Capability in developing sourcing strategies and leading their implementation, delivering in a Change / Transformation based environment
  • Significant experience of both traditional and newindustry-related processes, technology and strategies
  • Supplier Relationship Management programme experience, governance and relationship development
  • Outsourcing experience would be desirable
  • Strong knowledge of best-practice sourcing/procurement procedures and processes
  • Detailed knowledge of the external trends and best practices, pricing, incentive and outcome-based commercial models
  • Leadership experience of complex, multi-functional sourcing projects
  • Ability to develop performance measures for category and sub-categories
  • Deep knowledge of the relevant supply markets 

Skills, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Strong sourcing and procurement experience, greater than 7 years in a senior procurement role/s
  • Strategy development and implementation
  • Capability to quickly learn complex functional requirements and supply market dynamics
  • Development of strategic relationships with suppliers
  • Ability to influence peers and geographically dispersed teams
  • Effective communication and presentation competencies
  • Project team leadership (geographically dispersed and cross-functional with proven results)
  • Proven record of success in negotiations with suppliers
  • Degree / CIPS / Equivalent
