Client Details

  • Deliver a comprehensive review of the Category purchasing activities and refresh methodology where appropriate to implement changes, enhance cost improvement and efficiency.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Procurement define and implement strategies that deliver year on year cost improvement and cost containment in line with business expectations
  • Develop and execute an appropriate standardisation strategy for the category.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Procurement establish appropriate KPIs for the category, against which objective performance measurement can be undertaken.
  • Direct and manage the team, including but not limited to dealing with any employee concerns/problems, directing & assigning work, training, managing under performance, performance appraisals, etc., for the purpose to ensure work assignments are complete and within department objectives / business needs.
  • Conduct individual staff and team meetings with direct reports.
  • Provide staff training and supervision of the work undertaken by the direct reports.
  • Attend meetings between key strategic suppliers, manufacturers, relevant internal departments and customers.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Procurement put in place robust purchasing processes and procedures that will be consistently applied by team members.
  • Work in conjunction with other Category Managers to achieve a consistent approach to purchasing practices and support other categories as and when necessary
  • For regulatory compliance underpin robust processes that maintain purchasing information, files and records.
  • Ensure suppliers are consistently aware of the business objectives and where appropriately challenge
  • Support Team members to identify potential strategic suppliers, visiting existing suppliers, and building and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Through the procurement cycle agree terms and negotiate supply agreements, including discount structures and volume rebates.
  • Establish a process to consistently evaluate bids to make recommendations based on commercial and technical factors.
  • Establish & maintain strategic relationships with key suppliers who are aligned to the company's needs.
  • Work closely with Clinical to ensure that cost effectiveness and clinical effectiveness work hand in hand.
  • This is not an exhaustive list as senior positions of this nature will require flexibility, adaptability and response to business needs.


  • Graduate or equivalent, and MCIPS qualified preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in a Purchasing role, experience of leading a team is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience working in a complex multi-site operation is desirable but not essential
  • Demonstrates experience of strategic competence and successful negotiations with suppliers at the highest levels, with evidence of having applied innovative thinking, persuasive and negotiating skills
  • "Hands on" approach. Versatile, tenacious and people orientated. Result orientated and confident.
  • Sets priorities taking into account short and long-term needs of the business.

  • Experience in successfully leading a team, including mentoring of and personal development for individual staff is desirable but not essential.
  • The ability to work effectively with senior and other business management is essential.
  • Data gathering and analysis skills, showing an ability to translate a thorough understanding of the big picture into an appropriate level of detail for staff of all levels mitigating risks associated with decisions made.
  • Ability to maintain a sound and effective supplier relationship based on the highest standards of ethical conduct.
  • Experience of health care or pharmaceutical industries is desirable but not essential.
  • Competent use of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, as a minimum) at an advanced level.
  • Full Driving License required.
  • Proven track record of controlling and reducing external spend whilst developing a robust supplier base.
  • Conversant with modern procurement and purchasing techniques.
  • Mentoring new starters, providing 'on the job' training to existing team members, and ensuring that the team are satisfactorily supported in their day to day work activities.
  • Continuous development of self and individual team members.
