Our client is a market leader, a wholly owned division of one of the world’s most successful business services providers, and a supply chain leader within the life sciences sector. It offers time critical International Air Freight and Road Freight logistics services to the Pharmaceutical, Life Sciences and Clinical Trials Logistics Sector.

This is a newly created and strategic position reporting to Director and VP level. As EMEA Air Freight & Logistics Manager, you will be responsible for coordinating air freight activities in the EMEA region providing competitive internal services to our client’s business units by achieving competitive freight rates, minimising cost whilst optimising service, leveraging industry presence and coordinating freight strategy. This role requires someone with a combination of analytical, operational and commercial negotiation skills.   You will work closely with our client’s EMEA strategic operations leadership team and country operations managers across a global network of depots and most importantly with leading airlines and airfreight and road freight providers. The role will also involve reverse freight logistics management of specialist packaging on behalf of our client.

The ideal applicant will be of graduate calibre and will possess in-depth experience of time sensitive international temperature controlled express transportation and logistics via both air express and road transport in the EMEA marketplace.   This experience should preferably have been gained within the life sciences, pharmaceutical or clinical trials logistics sector. However applicants with experience gained within other time sensitive air freight sectors would also be considered.

The primary purpose will be to undertake in-depth analysis including development of overall freight and distribution cost to serve models, air freight logistics planning, and accordingly making recommendations and supporting the execution of physical operational network changes. 

The Role:
• Business lead for EMEA airfreight and logistics services.
• Provision of internal customer service support acting as the primary point of contact to meet inbound and outbound air freight service requirements.
• Work closely with Regional Directors and Operational Management across the global network of depots to identify areas for improvement, consolidation and integration, reviewing performance, costs and KPI’s and enhancing overall service quality.
• Service level delivery to customers, agreeing and reporting on air freight and road freight capacity and availability in the global network in conjunction with local management and new business logistics project teams.
• Engage closely with stakeholders in the analysis of existing freight transportation and operational practices to determine process and cost improvement opportunities.
• Analyse freight transportation network strategies, comparing multiple scenarios in order to identify synergies between business units/depots globally.
• Planning of freight capacity requirements in line with regional sales and project plans, recommending opening of new facilities, new third-party freight partnerships and integration and consolidation of freight as appropriate.
• Negotiate freight and shipping tariffs with global airlines and carriers (air freight and road freight for different regions across EMEA. Implementation of a virtual freight tracking tool. Management of the RFP/tender process to ensure best cost.
• Completion of shipping and freight routing process to achieve highest transportation level at the lowest possible cost through correct carrier selection.
• Analysis and compilation of key operational metrics to identify opportunities for reduction in cost of freight, logistics and shipping, without impacting service levels.
• Resolution of operational failures and assistance in the implementation of continual improvement processes.
• Work closely with finance to audit freight, logistics and shipping carrier invoices including analysis of freight accruals impacting logistics
The Ideal Candidate:
• University degree educated in logistics, business, economics or finance
• Proven track record in logistics including pan European, EMEA or Global logistics, air freight forwarding and shipping gained in-house with life science, pharmaceutical, clinical trials logistics or other time sensitive manufacturer or eCommerce retailer or within a third-party logistics provider. A good understanding of international trading and operational processes.
• In-depth knowledge of operational supply chain and logistics processes for air freight and road freight.
• Experienced operating in a multinational matrix environment.
• Excellent analysis, numeracy and planning skills with proven financial and analytical and decision making skills gained within an international logistics role.
• Strong commercial acumen.
• Practical knowledge of Cost, Insurance and Freight; Freight on Board, Delivered Duty Paid and Delivered Duty Unpaid transportation methods.
• Experience of customs import and export taxes and duties across international borders.
• Culturally aware with strong confident communication, influencing, relationship building, team working and stakeholder engagement skills gained within a multinational/international corporate environment.
• Excellent people engagement, persuasion, influencing, supervision, coordination motivation and leadership skills.
• Track record which demonstrates excellent continuous improvement and change management experience.
• Ambitious, results focused with excellent attention to detail and strong prioritisation and planning skills which are a prerequisite to success within this fast moving and pressurised environment.
