Head of Procurement


Hays are pleased to work in partnership with one of the leading healthcare services providers seeking Head Of Procurement on a permanent basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a talented and inspirational manager who is both hands-on and strategic to head initially a team of four which has a view of growth.

As a Head Of Procurement you will take a strategic & operational lead for the implementation and management of the procurement and purchasing strategy. Through strong leadership make a substantial contribution to the growth and success of the business by ensuring best value is achieved for all purchasing requirements and by managing inventory to maximise cash flow, whilst ensuring patient and operational requirements are met.

Key Responsibilities;

Procurement strategy and responsibilities
  • Plan, develop and implement an effective procurement strategy that will deliver and add significant measureable value.
  • Prioritise, develop, introduce and implement new policies and purchasing procedures across the business.
  • Monitor purchasing trends and use market knowledge to maximise efficiencies; leading the procurement team to deliver a cost effective and efficient service.
  • Promote the benefits of effective procurement across functions by influencing, negotiating, educating and persuading others to embrace innovative quality cost efficient alternatives.
  • Continually strive to develop greater market and product expertise in order to interact more effectively with suppliers.
  • Develop, manage and maintain an accurate Material Requirements Planning (MRP) system to ensure effective planning, purchasing and inventory management; applying the Just in Time’ (JIT) Lean strategy, to reduce inventory and associated carrying costs.
  • Lead change to support continued product development, rationalisation and standardisation to reduce costs.
  • Work closely with operations and logistics to maximise stockholding positions, balancing cost and product availability.
  • Provide accurate input costings for creation of bids and response to tender.




  • Education/Qualifications

    - Educated to Degree level
    – CIPS qualified or equivalent experience
    – Pharmaceutical industry experience essential.
    – Experienced in the negotiation of commercial agreements and influencing at a senior level
    – Expert knowledge of procurement strategy, negotiating and purchasing skills
    – A good technical appreciation of the range of procurement categories
    – Demonstrated performance in leading cost reduction from supply chains
    – Experience of leading a team

    Experience of working in a fast paced, high-pressure environment
    – Pharmaceutical industry experience essential.
    – Experienced in the negotiation of commercial agreements and influencing at a senior level
    – Expert knowledge of procurement strategy, negotiating and purchasing skills
    – A good technical appreciation of the range of procurement categories
    – Demonstrated performance in leading cost reduction from supply chains
    – Experience of leading a team.
    – Experience of working in a fast paced, high-pressure environment
