Our client is a well-established and respected manufacturer of fixtures, fittings and components both mechanical and electronic in the home and building infrastructure products sector. Highly acquisitive and experiencing excellent growth, the company is based in a brand-new office and NDC complex in the West Midlands close to the M6/M54 but has operational facilities and subsidiaries nationally and globally.

As a result of the consolidation of several operations and processes on to one brand new site our client requires an Interim Warehouse& National Distribution Centre Manager.

Reporting to the Supply Chain Director, as Interim Warehouse & Distribution Centre Manager you will take the lead at the new National Distribution Centre.  There is a strong possibility of a permanent role for interested applicants however initially the client is seeking an Interim Warehousing and Distribution Centre Management expert to implement operational processes and structure within the new NDC.   

You will be responsible for the safe and efficient receipt, storage and despatch of palletised and packaged goods. The NDC/National Distribution Centre manages delivery to national retail and trade customers through a third-party logistics and parcels carrier network on a next day delivery basis.  You will also ensure effective inventory control within a new state of the art WMS and delivery system. Key to success is management of the best value service and cost from the 3PL carriers. You will lead both strategic development and continuous process improvement of the national logistics and distribution operation ensuring KPI’s, negotiation and implementation of Service Level Agreements/SLA’s and operational rigour and effectiveness ensuring the highest levels of customer service and delivery within stringent budgetary controls. 

As a strong leader you will demonstrate a track record of people development and motivation, resource, succession and talent planning. 

The Role

·         Identification of synergies, removal of duplication and implementation of a single set of operational processes, KPI’s and structure within the newly consolidated National Distribution Centre operation.

·         Day to day planning and operational management of all warehouse activities including goods-in, storage, inventory, picking and despatch

·         Day to day management, monitoring of and negotiation with the 3PL carriers to ensure target service levels and costs are achieved

·         Focus on developing processes and procedures and the implementation and maximisation of use of the new WMS with 100% compliance

·         Evaluate existing roles and responsibilities within the warehouse/DC teams and recommend improvements to organisational design, roles and responsibilities and any personal development

·         Ensure health and safety of all warehouse/NDC staff including undertaking risk assessments and investigating near-miss incidents or accidents working closely with the National Health & Safety Manager.

·         Ensure all training is adequately undertaken for warehouse roles including FLT training

·         Take an active role in ISO9001 and 14001 QMS so support quality compliance

·         Ensure optimisation of warehouse space through effective planning, layout and utilisation

·         Maintain a strong focus on HR responsibilities through effective staff coaching and development, recruitment, counselling, discipline, appraisal etc

·         Ensure all KPI’s are monitored in order to maintain and improve supply chain performance

·         Develop a continuous improvement culture that focuses on every aspect of the warehouse operation

·         In addition to day to day activities you will also focus on strategic planning and development of warehouse/DC processes and layout, WMS implementation and enhancement, 3PL carrier solutions etc. In this regard you must be up to date with latest the best practice warehousing, logistics and supply chain methodologies and technology

Your Background

·         You will be educated to at least A level/OND/ONC standard or maybe to graduate/HND/HNC level

·         You will have a strong warehouse and distribution centre background providing a next day B2B delivery service to retail, wholesale or trade customers.

·         Your career history will include a consistent track record of senior leadership and change roles within warehouse and distribution centre management.

·         You will have experience in successfully managing teams of minimum 50 plus.

·         In addition to excellent day to day warehouse management and distribution centre operations experience you will also have a strong strategic focus.

·         Change management, transitioning and project managements skills are essential

·         Your experience and outlook will also contain a strong emphasis on continuous improvement

·         Excellent customer service will be at the centre of all that you do

·         A strong commitment to health and safety is absolutely essential
