Our client is a very fast paced business, experiencing rapid growth and a specialist division of a leading global player within the construction and building materials sector.  It is a market leading distributor of construction and building products and accessories to the civil engineering, construction and precast concrete industries.  Our client’s success has been built on delivering cost effective “one stop” value solutions via exceptional service within the highest standards of safety.

As part of its strategic growth plan, our client now wishes to strengthen its purchasing function with the appointment of a professional Purchasing Manager to lead a small team to manage the requirements of the UK & Ireland business.  The role reports to the Managing Director and will play a key role as part of the senior management team.  Working closely with the commercial sales and logistics team, the purchasing team buy a wide range of steel and plastic products globally both inter group and through specialist suppliers and will be responsible for all aspects of product life cycle management, supplier sourcing, selection, development and relationship management, thereby ensuring cost effective, efficient and time critical stock availability and delivery to clients.  The Purchasing Manager will also work closely with the Commercial Director to identify new products.  You will play a critical role in developing product sales and maximising gross margin through excellent product sourcing, purchasing and supply.


• Manage the day to day running of the purchasing department, leadership, management, motivation and development of the purchasing team.
• Manage key UK and international supplier relationships
• Overseas site visits to suppliers to ensure quality, health & safety and employee rights are being maintained to CSR standards
• Overhaul the complete supply chain management system and assist with the development of a UK centralised distribution operation
• Monitor and track deliveries and rate their speed and performance ratings.
• Monitor supplier service levels.
• Manage existing stock.
• Liaise with existing and possible future key suppliers to develop a strong relationship leading to an improved stock portfolio and reduced pricing.
• Work closely with the Commercial Director in developing new product lines and seeking out new markets for existing portfolio.
• Gather and analyse data in relation to purchasing categories in order to benchmark and identify potential cost saving measures.
• Flexibility to take on extra duties and integrate into the business.
• Flexibility to travel to other sites and suppliers which may include international travel.
• Assist in the collation of shipping/delivery and export paperwork from suppliers.
• Assist the Commercial & Operations Directors with strict stock control procedures.


The Ideal Applicant:

Our client is seeking a degree educated, CIPS qualified Sourcing & Purchasing Manager. Candidates with experience of sourcing and purchasing construction & building materials and accessories, including steel and plastic products and other similar commodities gained in a trading or global commodities role would be of interest especially in terms of analysing and evaluating the impact of commodity prices on the final cost to serve proposition to B2B clients.  Applicants must be highly numerate, analytical and with excellent negotiating skills.

You must also be able to benchmark and identify procurement efficiency improvement opportunities across processes, compliance, transactions, KPI’s.  You will be commercially astute, with experience of assessing external supply markets and skilled in translating opportunities into long term strategies.

The ability to lead, persuade and influence internal and external supply partners through a period of rapid growth and change, managing transformation tactically, operationally and strategically will be critical to success.  Candidates must have commercial experience of advanced negotiations with key account suppliers to deliver long term value objectives.   You will be an innovative, creative and strategic thinker.  Candidates must also possess demonstrable experience of stakeholder engagement and communication both with the group and the parent company and its shared services international procurement function in order to optimise cost saving synergies.
