Context & Scope

Justerini & Brooks (“J&B”) is a London, Hong Kong and Edinburgh based wine and spirits merchant, founded in 1749 and one of the world’s most recognised names in fine wine  with a royal warrant and a high reputation for quality and service.

J&B has many years of combined experience in buying and selling of fine and rare wines and whiskies and its portfolio provides access to a full range of exceptional value wines, fine and rare wines, en primeur and rare and collectable whiskies. J&B also has a dedicated on trade division which supplies wines, Champagnes and spirits to restaurants, bars, hotels, catering companies and independent retailers throughout the UK.

J&B‘s private clients are the global elite and as such they demand a luxury experience at every touch point in J&B. The international fine wine market is a competitive and demanding business. The focus for J&B is to continually develop our service in line with changing markets and client needs. The aim is to beat the competition and to develop long-standing client and supplier relationships by ensuring we offer market leading advice, stock and service to our customers.

Dimensions of the Role

Business Structure & Financial

  J&B is a c. £50m NSV business with a global customer and supplier base.
  J&B has 4 office locations.
  J&B runs a bespoke ERP system (Maginus) and general ledger (Dream); it also has amendments to standard Diageo policies considering its private client customer base and role in the luxury arena.
  J&B’s commercial structure includes private client sales teams in both the UK and HK, a trade sales team and a broking and buying team.
  J&B’s customers are served by two warehouses: a fine warehouse in Corsham, Wiltshire and a trade warehouse in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire.
  J&B’s business is both B2B and B2C including regular interactions with high net worth individuals.
  This role sits on the Finance & Operations leadership team and plays a key role in shaping the success of Justerini & Brooks.

  The fine wine market is complex: it is global, agricultural and speculative at the same time.
  The organisation structure and culture needed to be successful in luxury is very different from the challenges faced in wider Diageo.

Purpose of Role

Lead the management of the movement and storage of all inventory managed by Justerini and Brooks (including customer reserves) balancing quality of service, cost and working capital. Drive a culture of putting the customer (external and internal) at the centre of everything the team does and continuous process improvement.

Key Accountabilities

  Manage the relationship with Octavian to ensure industry leading standards are maintained and developed in the storage and broking of the private reserves of the private clients of Justerini & Brooks, and that stock levels are accurate.
  Manage the relationship with Great Bear to ensure industry leading standards are maintained and developed in the storage of the trade wines of Justerini and Brooks, and that stock levels are accurate.
  In conjunction with the duty and excise teams at the third-party warehouses and Diageo, own the duty and excise compliance agenda and ensure robust process are in place to manage this.
  Create a customer focused (both external and internal) culture in the Operations team.
  Create a culture of continuous process improvement across the team including a robust forecasting model for stock requirements and inbound movements (volume, NSV and margin)
  Manage the buying of all spirits plus wines that are not managed by the Justerini & Brooks Buying team.
  Champion the inventory and logistics agenda from an Operations perspective across the business including the J&B Management Committee and monthly inventory meeting.
  Challenge the buying and sales teams on inventory positions in terms of stock turnover and stock cover levels.
  Lead a team of four covering buying, exporting, broking, Cellarers and prestige spirits.
  Coach and develop the team.
  Build collaborative, cross-functional process improvement focused relationships with key stakeholders (Octavian, Great Bear, freight forwarders such as Kukla and Hillebrand and internal teams including Broking, Hong Kong and Sales).
  Work with Broking to commercialise Cellarers.
  Work with the Head of Rare & Collectible Whiskies to develop a prestige spirits logistics offering for customers.

Qualifications & Experience Required

  Proven track record in a wine and spirits business
  Experience of working in a luxury goods business an advantage
  Excellent written and verbal communication
  Ability to build effective relationships at all levels with internal and external stakeholders
  Track record of driving continuous improvement
  People leadership experience an advantage
  Strong IT and data analysis skills including the use of a wine industry ERP, Excel and MS Outlook.
  Proven track of delivering excellent customer service
  Good attention to detail
  Open to change and continual development

Flexible Working

The role is office based at Golden Square in central London with regular visits to both warehouses.
